Consumer Protection / Information

The agencies listed here provide information and guidance for people who need assistance in managing financial resources, evaluating competitive products and services, understanding their consumer rights and seeking redress when they believe their rights have been violated.

These providers can assist in identifying and avoiding fraud and scams, offer education or counseling about credit and financial issues, advocate for you if you are a victim of a scam or financial exploitation, and other services.

Telephone scams are still out there! Report any suspicious calls you have received to the proper authorities. Here are some useful tips to keep in mind:

  • Have you checked into the background of people you are doing business with, especially if they will be working in or around your home?
  • Be wary of giving out your personal or private information over the phone unless you initiated the call.
  • Remember, no government agency will ever call you and ask for your Social Security number, bank account information or address unless you ask them to.

Medicaid can provide a range of assistance that can include: cash benefits, food assistance (SNAP), medical and dental coverage, and long-term-care cost assistance. Every program has different eligibility requirements. Contact your local Department of Human Services for more information or to apply for benefits.

Social Security Administration (SSA) administers Social Security, an insurance program providing retirement, disability, and survivors’ income benefit.
